Donkey Care Guide

Everything you need to give your miniature donkey a happy, healthy life.

Average Monthly Cost

$30 – $40

Miniature donkeys are one of the most affordable and rewarding animals you can own.

01

Feeding

Miniature donkeys do well on good quality grass hay — they do not need rich alfalfa hay, which can cause weight gain. A small amount of grain can be offered as a supplement or treat. Fresh, clean water should always be available.

Avoid overfeeding. Donkeys are efficient feeders and can become overweight easily, which leads to health problems. If your pasture is lush, limit grazing time.

02

Housing & Space

Miniature donkeys require minimal space compared to horses. A small pasture or dry lot with a simple three-sided shelter is sufficient. The shelter should protect them from rain, wind, and extreme temperatures.

Donkeys are social animals — they do best in pairs or small groups. A single donkey will become lonely and stressed. If you are getting one donkey, plan on getting two.

03

Hoof Care

Hooves should be trimmed by a farrier every 6–8 weeks. Overgrown hooves cause discomfort and can lead to long-term joint problems. Find a farrier experienced with miniature donkeys before you bring your animal home.

04

Veterinary Care

Schedule annual veterinary visits for vaccinations, dental floating, and general health checks. Your vet should also deworm your donkey on a regular schedule — typically every 8–12 weeks depending on your region and pasture conditions.

05

Handling & Socialization

Miniature donkeys are intelligent and gentle. Regular handling from a young age makes them easy to work with. They respond well to patience and positive reinforcement — grain treats and calm, consistent handling go a long way.

Our donkeys at Rocky Branch Longears are raised with daily human contact, so they arrive already accustomed to being handled.
